Free Walking Tour in Melbourne

Melbourne Free Walking Tour

Melbourne Free Walking Tour

This free Melbourne walking tour is run by a group of young people who are very passionate about giving tourists a well informed tour of the city.  Their brand is ‘I’m Free.’

They are very friendly and knowledgable.  In the tour, they will be taking you from historical Melbourne to its modern time.

They run the tour twice a day, at 10:30 am and 2:30 pm.  The tour operates every day on any weather conditions.  That’s dedication and they really love doing this.

The meeting point is at statue of Sir Redmond Barry, in front of the State Library of Victoria.  Look out for the people in green T-shirt.

How Are They Paid?

They are unfunded by any government and private companies.

At the end of the 2.5 to 3 hours of tour, all they ask is for you to tip them with the amount on what you think the tour is worth.

For the amount of work and information they deliver, I think the tour is easily worth A$30.  But it’s up to you to decide how much you think the tour is worth.

Where Do They Take You?

It was a very hot day in summer, when I join the free walking tour.  Unfortunately, by the end of the first half of the tour, I was feeling faint from the heat.

Here’s a tip for this tour in summer: make sure you have a hat or cap, a water bottle and sunscreen protection.

Here is a Google map of the first half of the walking tour.

What Can You See?

One of the most enjoyable part of the tour is the opportunity to meet people from all over the world.  It’s amazing that Melbourne has visitors from many parts of the world and this is one place to meet them.

So take a moment to introduce yourself and get to know the visitors in the group before the tour starts.

For the first half, the tour takes you to:

  • State Library of Victoria
  • Old Melbourne Gaol
  • Eight Hour Day Monument
  • Terrace Houses on Drummond Street
  • Carlton Gardens
  • Royal Exhibition Building
  • Parliament Gardens
  • State Parliament of Victoria
  • Greek Precinct
  • Her Majesty Theatre
  • Chinatown

They will take you through places that you will not normally go on your own.

Half Way Break

The first half of the tour ends at QV Complex.  Here you can have toilet break and also quickly grab a lunch.  There are many eateries in the complex.

If you plan not to continue the second half of the tour, I would strongly urge you to thank the tour leader and tip him or her.

The group also organises private tours.  If you want to learn more about ‘I’m Free’, please click here.
